Guardians of the Forest

This project is dedicated to the preservation and popularization of the unique wooden architectural heritage of Zakarpattia, which reflects the folk art of Ukraine from the 15th–19th centuries. Wooden churches are important cultural markers, but they are under threat of disappearance due to hostilities, fires, neglect, improper repairs, and natural disasters.

Project Objective:

To conduct an architectural and historical study of the wooden sacred architecture of Zakarpattia. This includes creating a digital archive and popularizing cultural heritage through 3D models and panoramic photographs. The documentation obtained as a result of the project will also help in conducting restoration works and scientific research.

Key stages of the project:

  • Conduct an expedition to select 15 wooden churches in Zakarpattia for digitization.
  • Perform comprehensive documentation of the objects (laser scanning, aerial photography, photogrammetry).
  • Create high-precision 3D models and architectural drawings.
  • Develop a digital archive with historical background information about the objects.
  • Publish the 3D models on international platforms such as Sketchfab, OpenHeritage3D, and Europeana.
  • Conduct interviews with local residents and experts to preserve the intangible context (building traditions, cultural significance).
  • Ensure the accessibility of materials for scientists, restorers, and a wide audience.
