Feel the Space: The Krychevsky Museum Without Barriers
The project created a barrier-free space at the Krychevsky Art Family Museum in Opishnia, where visitors can now explore Vasyl Krychevsky’s architecture by touch.
The museum now has a lift and ramps, tactile floor strips, tactile floor plans, Braille labels and QR codes with exhibit descriptions, and its guided tours are now interpreted into sign language. Our task was to open up Vasyl Krychevsky’s architecture to people with visual impairments. We created tactile 3D models of three buildings designed by the artist, which visitors can now explore with their hands. These models also bring Krychevsky’s architecture to a much wider audience, since not everyone has had the chance to see his buildings in Poltava or Kaniv in person.
Project goal:
To make Vasyl Krychevsky’s architectural heritage accessible to people with visual impairments through models they can explore by touch. To let visitors form a mental image of buildings they cannot see, and to feel like full participants in the museum space rather than outside observers.
Key project stages:
- Create digital 3D models of three buildings designed by Vasyl Krychevsky: the Krychevsky Art Family Museum in Opishnia, Poltava region; the Vasyl Krychevsky Poltava Local History Museum in Poltava; and the Taras Shevchenko Museum of the Shevchenko National Preserve in Kaniv, Cherkasy region.
- Produce tactile models from them that are easy to explore by hand.
- Hand the models over to the Krychevsky Art Family Museum’s exhibition as part of its barrier-free space.
