About the project

The "DMH Lviv AR" project is aimed at creating a high-precision 3D model of the Mykhailo Hrushevsky State Memorial Museum building in Lviv using photogrammetry and laser scanning technologies, as well as digitizing key museum exhibits. The museum is located in an authentic memorial villa from the early 20th century, where the family of the prominent Ukrainian historian and statesman Mykhailo Hrushevsky lived for over 12 years.

The project arose from the need to preserve the cultural and architectural heritage of the museum, as well as to popularize the history of Ukraine and authentic exhibits related to the era of the Ukrainian Revolution and Mykhailo Hrushevsky. The implementation of innovative technologies ensures the preservation of the architectural monument and museum objects in a digital format, simplifies restoration processes, and opens new opportunities for their presentation to a wide audience.

Project Tasks

  • Perform laser and photogrammetric scanning of the museum building to create its high-precision 3D model.
  • Digitize and create interactive 3D models of 23 unique museum exhibits.
  • Develop a mobile application with AR technology for a virtual tour of the museum and interactive viewing of exhibits.
  • Create souvenir postcards with AR that allow for virtual interaction with museum exhibits.
  • Raise public awareness about the importance of modern digital technologies in the field of cultural heritage preservation.

Implementation

The project was implemented by our team in 2019 with the support of the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation. In the first stage, laser and photogrammetric scanning of the museum building and exhibits was conducted using professional cameras, DJI drones, and a Leica BLK360 laser scanner. In the final stage, an interactive AR application "DMH Lviv AR" was created for Android and iOS platforms, along with souvenir AR postcards that allow users to take a virtual tour of the museum and explore the exhibits in detail.

Thanks to the "DMH Lviv AR" project, the museum received a modern tool for popularizing its heritage, allowing visitors from anywhere in the world to interact virtually with the monument and its exhibits. The project became an important example of successful digital transformation of cultural sites in Ukraine, stimulating similar initiatives in other museums.
