The "Pocket City – Lviv" project is aimed at digitizing prominent architectural monuments of Lviv using photogrammetry technologies, as well as popularizing them among a wide audience through augmented reality (AR) technologies.

The project arose from the need to preserve architectural heritage in a digital format, which is especially important due to the risks of losing or destroying historical buildings. Digital models make it possible to record the current state of architectural objects and simplify the processes of restoration, reconstruction, and research. At the same time, the use of modern technologies allows for an accessible presentation of cultural heritage to the general public.

Project Objective

The main goal of the project is the creation of accurate digital 3D models of important architectural objects in Lviv for their preservation, as well as the presentation of these models to a wide audience to popularize cultural heritage.

Tasks

  • Perform accurate scanning and create digital 3D models of Lviv's architectural monuments.
  • Develop a souvenir product that will popularize the cultural heritage of Lviv.
  • Present the created models to a wide audience through an interactive exhibition using AR technology.
  • Raise public awareness of the importance of digital technologies in preserving cultural heritage.
  • Stimulate the implementation of similar projects in other cities of Ukraine.

Implementation

The project was implemented in 2019 by our team in cooperation with Gwara Media.

The partnership with Gwara Media emerged after the teams met in Kharkiv, where we finalized the "Pocket City" concept together.

The initial stage included scanning architectural objects using photogrammetry. The final stage was an AR exhibition at the UCU Sheptytsky Center, and the development of the "Lviv. Pocket City" mobile application along with souvenir postcards. The idea to present digitized objects using AR arose exactly when the technology began to actively gain momentum, and we decided to use its new capabilities in our project. The project was implemented using the team's own resources.

The results of the project attracted public attention, particularly from the youth, and became the basis for similar projects in other cities of Ukraine ("Pocket Country").
