Sharivka Palace
About object
Sharivka Palace, also known as Sharivka Castle or the "Sugar Castle," is a prominent historical and architectural monument of the late 19th century, located in the urban-type settlement of Sharivka, Kharkiv Oblast. The building is constructed of white stone in the Neo-Gothic style. The history of the estate originates with the Olkhovsky landowners, but it reached its peak development and acquired its current appearance under its third owner, the sugar magnate Leopold Koenig (from 1881), who expanded the complex by adding outbuildings and significantly enlarging the surrounding arboretum. From 1925 to 2008, the palace operated as a tuberculosis sanatorium. The palace is a two-story structure distinguished by its architectural expressiveness. Its main entrance is accentuated by two high, octagonal towers topped with battlements and spires characteristic of the Neo-Gothic style. In total, the building features 26 rooms and three halls. The interior design of the central part has preserved impressive decorative elements, including artistic wall and ceiling murals, fireplaces made of white and pink marble, as well as authentic wood carvings on the grand staircase and in the library hall. The palace and park complex is complemented by Sharivka Park, which boasts rich plantations, ponds, and ancient trees, including an oak tree approximately 600 years old. Although the palace requires full restoration, it remains open to visitors and possesses the potential to become an International Center for Culture and the Arts.
