In 1912–1914, on the corner of Sadova and Hoholivska streets, within the limits of the former fortress, V. P. Shkuratov, a State Councillor and descendant of a Cossack officer family, built a manor in the form of a romantic castle with a tower, a balcony on the facade, and a Neo-Gothic spire. In 1915, the manor housed a teachers' seminary, in 1916 it became a military hospital, and from 1923, the building housed School No. 4, which operated there until the early 2000s. At one time, the famous poetess Liubov Zabashta studied at this school. During the Nazi occupation of the city during the Second World War, the building functioned as the only Jewish ghetto in the Chernihiv region. In 1951–1952, a two-story annex was added to the premises.
