UNESCO Wooden Tserkvas of Ukraine

The Ukrainian part of the UNESCO World Heritage property “Wooden Tserkvas of the Carpathian Region in Poland and Ukraine” (inscribed in 2013). These eight churches, built between the 16th and 19th centuries, represent the Boyko, Hutsul and Halych traditions of wooden sacred architecture: the tserkvas in Drohobych, Zhovkva, Matkiv, Nyzhnii Verbizh, Potelych, Rohatyn, Uzhok and Yasinia. Their log construction, tiered domes, surrounding galleries and preserved wall paintings and iconostases bear witness to the outstanding craftsmanship of Carpathian carpenters. These monuments have been digitised using laser scanning and photogrammetry. Accurate 3D models are vital for their preservation: they make it possible to monitor the condition of the buildings, plan restoration work and recover what may be lost in case of damage.
